Job Title: Nursing Supervisor/Matron

Grade: RN4

Department: Medical and Nursing Care

Position reports to: General Manager

Supervisory Responsibility for: RN1, RN2, EAN and Practical Nurses

Summary of Job: Reporting to the General Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the effective management of Nursing Care Services, in order to ensure a high level of health care delivery to residents of the Home. Working closely with the medical team, the social worker and the other auxiliary services; ensures that optimum benefits in the area of curative and preventative medicine, mental health and good hygiene practices are effected and sustained.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from an accredited Institution
  • Registered with the Nursing Council of Jamaica
  • Certificate in Caring for the Elderly
  • Ten (10) years work experience as a Registered Nurse of which five (5) years should be in a Supervisory capacity
  • Practical experience in Basic Computer Applications
  • Experience working with the Elderly population will be an asset
  • Professional qualification and or certification in Supervisory Management would be an asset
  • Professional qualification and or certification in Performance Management will be an asset

 

Key responsibilities

Management and Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the development of the strategic direction of the Medical and Nursing Department;
  • Develops the Annual Work Plan and Budget for the Nursing Department;
  • Prepares and submits monthly and quarterly performance review reports for the Medical and Nursing Department;
  • Periodically reviews and makes adjustments to achieve stated objectives;
  • Provides supervision of nursing and other assigned staff in the application of clinical standards and skills, in accordance with established policies and practices guidelines;
  • Occasionally represent the General Manager at various meetings

Clinical/Technical/professional Responsibilities:

  • Implements new methodologies to the institution’s health care programme to enhance service delivery;
  • Demonstrates the ability to offer medical advice to Registered and Practical Nurses on basic health issues;
  • Review Monthly Inspection / Audit Reports of all medication and take corrective action where necessary as well as submit a quarterly report to the General Manager for review;
  • Ensure Sharps Containers are effectively disposed of in a timely  manner;
  • Ensure that there is an effective management of all records and documentation within the Nursing Department;
  • Ensure that accountability and standard operating procedures are maintained within the Nursing Department as per policies and procedures outlined in Golden Age Home Operational Manual and as per Nursing Council Standards;
  • Collaborate with HR Department in coordinating an effective immunization program;
  • Reviews and approve monthly and fortnightly payroll submissions for payment for personnel assigned to the section;
  • Participates directly in patient care as the need arises;
  • Acts as liaison with other institutions, personnel, and external service providers in an effort to ensure compliance with service agreements;
  • Conducts patient-safety rounds on a timely basis to ensure that proper hygiene is practiced and address any other threats to patients’ wellbeing;
  • Researches and presents findings to management as it relates to medical care for appropriate action;
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of programmes organized by the Social Worker, Programs Officer and Physiotherapist that enhances the quality of life of the residents;
  • Ensures accuracy and timelines of patient care plan as well as clinical record documentation;
  • Liaises with the concessionaire to ensure that meals are adequately prepared to meet the health needs of residents;
  • Encourages and stimulates family involvement in the planning and implementation of patient care and ensures that the expectation of families are met;
  • Networks with other Nursing Practitioners in the Public and Private Sectors to exchange ideas and keep abreast of new nursing trends and changes;
  • Ensures best practices and keeps abreast of current professional literature, new technology and advances in nursing practice; and provides for the introduction and demonstration of new practice techniques and equipment;
  • Ensures the adequate provision of supplies and equipment necessary to provide quality care;
  • Participates in meetings, committees and any project as assigned;
  • Chair the Discharge Committee for Residents recommended for discharge;
  • Performs any other related functions that may be assigned by the General Manager from time to time;
  • Ensure that burial procedures are effectively managed;
  • Submit requests to the GM for approval of payment to facilitate the administration of medical procedures as requested by the respective Medical Practitioner.

 

Human Resource Responsibilities

  • Promotes a harmonious employee relations climate in the section;
  • Guides the provision of training and development for nurses; ensuring that
  • a skilled work force is in place;
  • Ensures that staff is adequately informed of new developments relating to their terms and conditions of engagement;
  • Ensures compliance with professional expectation as defined by the Home’s values, policies and professional standards;
  • Complies with the biennial requirement of the Nursing Council of Jamaica in order to maintain current licenses; 
  • Assists in the education of nurses and other medical grouping; 
  • Initiates and assists as is required in the disciplinary process in consultation with management and according to established rules and guidelines on collective agreement; 
  • Monitors and evaluates the performance of Registered Nurses, conduct and review performance appraisals on a quarterly basis and recommends and/or take corrective action which will result in the realization of established personal/organizational goals; 
  • Participates in the recruitment of staff for the division and recommends the transfer, promotion, termination and leave in accordance with established policies and procedures; 
  • Leads the development and implementation of a succession planning programme for the Nursing Section to facilitate continuity and availability of required skills and competencies to meet the needs of the Home.

 

Other Duties:

  • Performs other related duties that may be assigned from time to time

  • The Nursing Department Annual Work Plan and Strategic Plan are developed and submitted;
  • Monthly Medication Audit/Inspections conducted and reports submitted;
  • Immunization Program Implemented
  • Sharps Containers disposed of in a timely Manner;
  • SOPs implemented as per Operational Manual
  • Budget preparation for the department completed and submitted in a timely manner
  • Payroll documentation for Nursing Staff vetted, approved and submitted to the Relevant department within the specified timeframe;
  • Adequate provisions of supplies are maintained within the department
  • Residents are assessed and treated in a timely manner;
  • Conduct performance assessments of Registered Nurses on a quarterly basis
  • Produce Succession Planning Reports for the Nursing Department.
